Entertainment










Entertainment is an event, performance, product, or activity designed to give pleasure or relaxation to an audience (although, for example, in the case of a computer game the "audience" may be only one person). The audience may participate in the entertainment passively as in watching opera, or actively as in computer games. Entertainment is the result from the process which amuses, pleases, or diverts a person.

The playing of sports and reading of literature are usually included in entertainment, but these are often called recreation more specifically, because they involve some active participation beyond mere leisure.

The industry that provides entertainment is called the entertainment industry.

Examples of entertainment

Animation

Anime or TV manga refers to animation originating from Japan (In the Occidental use of the word. In Japan the word refers to all animation.) It may contain adult themes, and futuristic locales.


Cinema
Cinema provides moving pictures as an art form which display theatrical works or sport games on film or celluloid. Cinema may also be called films or movies.


Theatre

There are several different forms and genres that actors and actresses may use to present the story line to their audience, ranging widely with playwrights, venue, cultural backgrounds, and events to be portrayed.


Circus

A traveling company of performers such as acrobats, clowns, trained animals, trapeze acts, hula hoopers, tightrope walkers, jugglers, unicyclists and other stunt-oriented artists come together with acts that may dazzle, surprise or impress the viewer. A circus entertains with unique sights and sounds, the daring and unbelievable feats


Comedy
Comedy provides laughter and amusement. The audience is taken by surprise, by the parody or satire of an unexpected effect or an opposite expectations of their cultural beliefs. Slapstick film, one-liner joke, observational humor are just a few of the many forms of comedy which have developed since early days of jesters and traveling minstrels.


Comics

Several famous comics revolve around super heroes such as Superman, Batman. Marvel Comics and DC Comics are two well known publishers of comic books. Manga is the Japanese word for comic and print cartoons.

Caricature represents another type of graphical entertainment, though the purposes may vary from merely putting smile on viewers face to raising a social awareness to moral vices of a person being caricaturised.


Dance

DancingDance refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting. The entertainment provided may be for the dancer or the viewer of the dance. The dance varies in format from the ballet, cancan, charleston, Highland fling, folk dance, sun dance, modern dance or polka to name a few.

Sports

Youth enjoying the sport of soccerSport provides enjoyment and recreation usually following a set form or ruleset. Athletes may compete on a competitive level entering olympics and teams of various levels of amateur or professional level. Sports may also be engaged in for recreation or play activity. Football, golf, swimming, basketball, bowling are a few of the many various types of sports to be partaken of. may encompass athletes who provide entertainment at a national level in a wide variety of activities. The Canadian Football League, Major League Soccer, National Hockey League, National Basketball Association are a few national sport franchises.

Reading

Reading for pleasureReading comprises the interpretation of written symbols. An author, poet or playwright sets out a literary composition for publication to provide education or diversion for the reader. Paperback or hard cover books, magazines, periodicals, puzzle books, crossword magazines, coloring books all seek to provide diversification for the reader. Fantasy, horror, science fiction, mystery, american literature are a few forms of reading entertainment.


Games
